[ She frowns at all the noise and the breathless state he's in, ]
Matt--are you running? Matt!
[ But then he's coming through the door and her own sadness is replaced with concern and a little annoyance. She hangs up her phone as she moves over to him, cursing at him in Russian and then slipping into English, ]
You think you're indestructible? Running through the city and streets like that? What if someone had hit you?!
[There's enough time to hang up and take a gulp of air. The Russian comes at him, rapid fire. He knows her well enough to read worry and scorn in the foreign syllables.]
I didn't want to risk missing you.
[Matt's shoulders still heave a little and he has the audacity to smile in relief. He is steady on his feet but still starts to slip to one knee. Grabbing for her hands.]
Before anything happens...
[Okay. Phew. Here he is. Here it is. This is real.]
[ That damn smile of his always seems to disarm her; she can't stay mad at him. Especially when she knows he wasn't intentionally trying to worry her. Just get to her. She doesn't even know what is going to happen next. Are they going to be sent home? Are they going to be magicked away with little notice?
But then he's taking her hands and going down to one knee. Her eyes widen and she--her brain feels like it's stopped. Not something that happens to her often.
The question comes and she continues to stare down at him, speechless. All she can get out is his name, almost whispered. ]
[That smile only brightens and widens. With worry and with earnestness. It isn't a reply so he licks his lips and presses her hands tighter.]
I don't know what is going to happen next. But... I know that anywhere you go, I want to go with you.
[He swallows and blinks. This isn't anyone's dream arrangement of matrimony. They don't have a ring or a formal occasion to mark. Just... the feeling that the rug is going to come away and it's no magic carpet. The whole reality might go into a free fall.]
[ She bites down on her bottom lip as tears gather in her eyes. She knows they've talked somewhat about this. Knows she wanted a family with him if her incentive was granted. But for him to actually propose. And on this day...
Her voice breaks slightly, ]
Are you sure?
[ She's giving him an out. And maybe she needs to hear it for herself. ]
[His eyes screw shut and he lightly shakes his head before sparing a hand to remove his glasses and tucking them into his shirt. Honesty. As always, Natasha cuts him right to the core asking for what's real. Her life has been full of deception and double talk.
Matt wants to give her reality and stability when all the odds are against them. Glazed hazel green eyes search his world of fire for her face and his free hand reverently crosses himself.]
I'm sure. I love you. God strike me dead if any of these are lies.
